Athlete Ally Responds to Montana Anti-Trans Athlete Bill
May 10, 2021 (New York, NY) — Athlete Ally responded to news that on Friday, Montana became the latest state to pass legislation banning transgender youth from participating in sports. This also marked 2021 as a record-breaking year for enactment of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
With Gov. Greg Gianforte’s signing of House Bill 112, Montana joins Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Idaho in signing anti-transgender athlete legislation into law. South Dakota’s governor issued executive orders to the same effect.
“Montana’s so-called Save Women’s Sports Act does nothing to save women’s sports, because it addresses none of the actual threats to women’s sports,” said Joanna Hoffman, Director of Communications at Athlete Ally. “Instead, it targets transgender youth who simply want to play sports with their friends. This is not a solution to a problem — it’s dangerous, discriminatory, and hurts all athletes, including girls and women. Transgender youth in Montana: you are loved, and you are not alone.
