July 1, 2021 (New York, NY) — Athlete Ally responded today to news that the White House has announced new actions to advance equality, inclusion, and opportunity for transgender Americans. These actions include the creation of a new White House-led Interagency Working Group on Safety, Inclusion, and Opportunity for Transgender Americans; expansion of the availability of accurate Federal IDs for transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary Americans; and the launch of a new best practices toolkit, among others.
The toolkit specifically addresses the need for transgender students to be free from discrimination at school activities, which include school athletics. It also notes legal commitments to protecting the rights of transgender student athletes through the Department of Justice.
“This commitment from the Biden-Harris Administration in support of transgender Americans — and specifically transgender youth athletes — could not come at a more critical time as we continue to face the worst legislative attacks on record against the transgender community,” said Anne Lieberman, Director of Policy and Programs at Athlete Ally. “The White House is taking concrete steps to uphold the fundamental human rights of transgender Americans, and we look forward to continuing to work collaboratively to ensure that every transgender child is safe, welcome and included in every part of their life, especially while playing the sport they love.”
